Regrets hold significant power. They can be heavy and cruel, weighing us down physically and energetically, keeping us small in our stories, unworthy of our gifts and uncertain in our values. At the same time, they can be unsung heroes - messengers carrying critical messages about what is ours to do, what matters to us most, and what unique skills and capacities we hold that are medicine for ourselves and the world.
Living with regret over time robs us of our ability to be present in the present. We may be drawn back in time - reliving past experiences, wishing they were different, trying to think of what we could have done, or should have said to produce more favorable outcomes. And/or we can be pulled forward into the future, riddled with anxiety or hyper-vigilance, working desperately to ensure that we don't make the same mistake twice, risk the same injury by self or others, or re-open or pour salt in a persisting wound.
