Rowing + Growing: River Skills for Life

Rowing + Growing: River Skills for Life is a unique offering created by women, for women, that empowers us to lead with water as stewards and guides both on and off the river.

Together we'll spend six days on the Upper Colorado River learning valuable whitewater rafting and river safety skills while building community with women and water in a supportive and growth-minded environment.

By the end of the week, we'll grow physically and mentally, building confidence in our knowledge and ability to:

  • rig and safely maneuver an oar-rig raft through class II whitewater
  • understand basic river hydrology
  • identify river hazards
  • practice basic river rescue techniques, and
  • minimize outdoor recreation resource impacts

We'll also grow emotionally and spiritually, expanding our willingness and capacity to:

  • ask for, offer, and receive support
  • trust our intuition and act upon it
  • understand and speak the language of water, and
  • work and play collaboratively and creatively with women and the natural environment

Rowing + Growing: River Skills for Life is hosted by the Colorado River Center and led by Katy Smith, founder of Intentional Adventures, and Lisa Cheney-Philp, founder of Women of the Water. It takes place at Rancho del Rio on the Upper Colorado River. All or part of this operation is conducted on public lands under special permit from the US Bureau of Land Management.
